just talking
Today Kim was feeling ill. I ended up hanging out at the local warung – a little shop which sells Nasi Goreng – spiced fried rice with egg – coffee, soft drinks and other snacks, and talking with Gunawan and Asman. From Gunawan I heard more stories of the rescue centers in Indonesia, some of the reasons behind political unrest in Indonesia and got to know him a bit better. Asman and I also talked a bit about this and that including the average age of marriage in Indonesia and Canada. He’s said he wasn’t yet married but at 23 has a little while. The average age according to him is 25 for men and 20 for women.

A lot of us will be every bit as interested in your cultural and political musings as in your scientific ones as conflicting voices from this quarter are just starting to be heard by the rest of the world. As you can't speak much Bahasa yet, it will be great whenever you can speak with local people through an interpreter. Tell us what you learn, and convey warm greetings to all from Canada!
Hi there "notafaxline" :) Guess I know who you are... now that I see your photo!
We try to speak to the locals as much as possible and those that speak English here interpret for us.
I have been asked to teach some conversational English and agreed to do so with the warning that it really wasn't my strong point but that I'd give it a shot. There were 9 people who showed up at the 7pm class at the IAR office with a wide range of ability in English. It will be a challenge to find suitable material and topics - they are all hungry to learn but I don't know who to tailor my lesson to. At any rate - it is rewarding to be able to give something. I only regret that I didn't put more time into learning some basic Indonesian. I'm picking up a very little, very slowly. It would be my first advice to anyone wanting to really be effective here is to learn the language.
